Reflections on the Busy and the Productive.

Continuing my journey through Project Proverbs 31, I am switching focus to the following passage:

She keeps an eye on everyone in her household,
and keeps them all busy and productive.

When I first read these words and thought about a real and direct application to my life in its current state, I couldn’t help but laugh. My first thought was how busy I feel like our house always is; and, how with this New Year, hubby and I are striving for less hectic, less busy, less stuff, more peace. The last thing I want is to keep my house busy. Is that really what “busy” in this context means? And then I thought about the redundancy (and humor) of trying to keep our two year old (perhaps the busiest person in our house right now) busy.

And then there is the word productive. Sitting there. Taunting me. Saying “nannie, nannie, boo-boo!” Oh, how I wish I could call myself “productive.” Sure, I have my moments (occasionally); but, I cannot honestly say that I run my days in a genuinely productive manner. How do I become less busy, yet more productive? Are those even the right goals? Needless to say, these next couple of weeks (or however long I find myself spending on this passage) should be a very interesting journey.

Are you busy? How about productive?

  1. For us, I think keeping busy and being productive go hand in hand. I always try to involve the kids in activities that keep their minds occupied and also teach them something. That makes our busy work productive! lol For planning my days I use Teux Deux. It’s a great resource – if a to do does not get done it automatically moves it to the next day. And it’s accessible by anyone in the family online. On the staying less busy point – for me personally I feel overwhelmed and “too busy” when I have to drive to commitments a lot. So I am very picky about what I commit to and what the kids commit to.

  2. Oh, and I just wanted to say that I also feel very blessed to have a strong, beautiful, Godly woman as my cousin in law!! You are an awesome mother and I am truly amazed by how you are able to work and do everything you do!
